During his year Miles changes a lot as a person. In the beginning of the book he is lonely and quiet. He hasn't ever broken the rules. He doesn't have any friends. He looks at boarding school as a fresh start. He tries smoking and drinking. he speaks up more and does things he would have never tried. Alaska makes him want to change and shows him it's okay to be bad. She hooks him up with a girl and spends all Thanksgiving with him. He thinks she is perfect.
But Alaska has problems of her own. She hates going home. He parents are cruel and she will do anything she can to get away from them. She spends holidays on campus. She even told on a girl just so she couldn't get expelled. So under that cool attitude is really a scared girl.
So both of them are hiding something. Miles is hiding his old self and his love for Alaska. While she hides her secrets and why she doesn't want to go home. Some people like to start fresh and for them this was the best way to do that. So Miles and Alaska really do have a lot in common.
